Top Ten Reasons Why We Should Never Meditate

Is meditation really for everybody? Aren’t there a lot of good reasons never to meditate? Seems like all we do on this blog is go on and on about how great meditation is. To remedy this one-sided approach and bring a bit of balance to the blog, I’ve painstakingly compiled a carefully researched list of the top ten reasons never to meditate. Please feel free to add your own reasons in the comments section.

Here is the list of the Top Ten Reasons Why We Should Never Meditate:

10. I like being stressed out and on edge most of the time

9. It’s too old school. How can something that people have done for thousands of years have any relevance now?

8. Why would anyone want to get to know their own mind? The little bit that I’ve seen of my mind convinces me it’s time to get to know someone else’s!

7. It’s too popular. I refuse to follow the crowd even when something is really good for me.

6. I am too distracted by my thoughts and emotions to remember to meditate.

5. Who wants to be teased by their friends for having too much equanimity?

4. If everyone meditated the world might become a peaceful, boring place without all that exciting anger and aggression.

3. I have so little time to surf the web, and catch up on Facebook as it is.

2. Meditation seems too much like sitting around doing nothing.

And the number one reason never to meditate is:

1. I would rather tirelessly think about the same thoughts and emotions over and over again in a seemingly endless loop than learn to rest peacefully in my own natural awareness

In case of severe mental illness, particularly schizofrenia, there are many cases where meditation wouldn't be recommended. Or only under professional and very close guidance...

In case of less severe mental illness, intensive meditation practice of many hours a day would still not be recommended.

We've all seen people losing it on intensive meditation retreats... (granted, it often has to do with them discontinueing their medication, but still)

I wish more people would take this point seriously. Too many people think it's always harmless. Meditation techniques should not be "one size fits all". They are powerful because they affect people and need to be used appropriately and according to the conditions of the person practicing.

I love your humor, Erric. #2 sometimes gets under my skin! The sense of doing "nothing" can sometimes be unnerving!

It was hard to choose which one should be #1, the one you cited or the actual #1 reason.

Quoting Kevin:
Another reason: Life's too short.

Good one Kevin!

How about: life's too short to just sit there without doing anything

Wow! No wonder I never seem to get the "real important" things done that need to be done, I'm too busy meditating!!! Thanks for the humor and out-of-the-box approach to addressing the excuses that so many of us (can) make up for not meditating. And with that, I think I'll....meditat e!! Take care.

I think meditation should come with a public health warning: BEWARE! This WILL change your life. Once you've had a glimpse of the bigger picture you won't want to put your head back in the sand of mundane life. Wasn't it Shantideva who said something like "better not to undertake it at all - Not to start it and then turn back..."?

Great point Will! I remember on my first meditation retreat I felt like I walked into a new room to check out the environment and when I turned around the door was gone. I couldn't go back...

Linda you point out the odd conundrum a meditation blogger faces each time we sit in front of the computer to compose a post.

11. Meditation could take away some drama from your life, or even all of it gradually ... but we really love the drama, don't we?

you missed the entire idea behind it . Or just making a funny joke.
But if you prefer to stay with the bullshit in your head rather than just trying to be thoughtless, you are suely missing out
