Interview: Josh Korda Dharma Punx NYC

Last week, I attended the regular Tuesday night sitting at Dharma Punx NYC. Led by Josh Korda, participants enjoy a 25-30 minute guided sitting followed by a Dharma talk and some Q&A.

Dharma Punx was founded by Noah Levine, who sees the rebellious energy of a lot of punk rock as thoroughly confluent with the teachings of the Buddha.   "Buddhism teaches present time awareness," he says. "It' not about living for some future date. It's not about living for some future date. It's about moment-to-moment awareness in this present time. That's punk. The Buddha said his path leads aginst the stream. That's punk."

In the Dharma talk that I attended, Josh skillfully mixed quotes from the Pali cannon with pithy observations about modern life combined with lots of humor. He connected the teaching of the buddha with normal everyday problems, speaking directly to the hearts minds of the attendees. I will post his talk in a week or two.

In the meantime, enjoy my mini interview with Josh.  Plus I have thrown in two testimonials, from the hundred-plus people that came,  on how meditation and Dharma Punx, fit into their life. Sorry the video quality isn't up to usual standards, the lights were quite dim...

I have enormous respect for Dharma Punx from what I have heard, and I am very grateful to Erric for bringing a flavor of this alive here. We need more inter-Sangha connection and outer world engagement. Thank you, Erric, and thank you, Josh, for sharing.

(I am a member of the Rigpa sangha in New York.)

Great interviews. Really appreciate hearing what's going on with fellow meditators out there—students and teachers. I'd never heard of Dharma Punx before, thanks for pointing them out. The sirens in the background just a reminder to me about some of the challenges of meditating in a big city.

Great post! Loved the interviews. As a diehard buddhist for many years, I found this approach really refreshing!
