The Wisdom of Awareness

I just got back to France after giving a couple of talks in NYC and then attending The Wisdom of Awareness retreat in Garrison.

The retreat was led by Sogyal Rinpoche and Tsoknyi Rinpoche and had guest speakers: Patrick Gaffney, Dan Goleman, Tara Bennett-Goleman and Sharon Salzberg.

Sogyal Rinpoche gave fantastic teachings on what meditation really is. A few of the students in the What Meditation Really Is class that I gave in New York came to the retreat. They never met Sogyal Rinpoche before and only planned to stay for a day. They were so moved by the presence of Rinpoche and how that brought them immediately into the meditative state that they all extended their stay.

Tsoknyi Rinpoche helped us all get in touch with our inner basic state of unconditional love.  I would tell you more, but he kept saying I couldn’t share it because it is about to be published in his new book (some kind of publisher agreement he signed). Anyway, he did say that one part of one of his talks could be used on the blog, so when we get that edited, I’ll post it.

Patrick Gaffney, Sogyal Rinpoche’s senior most student and editor of Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, augmented Sogyal Rinpoche’s teachings on meditation with his typical penetrating insight and very witty anecdotes.

Dan and Tara led a talk introducing how we can begin to recognize our habitual patterns (schemas) and transcend them, especially through meditation practice.  The next day Dan gave a talk on meditation and science, which will be available to watch on the blog soon.

Sharon is a love bomb! Her talks on meditation and metta (loving kindness) were entertaining and inspiring.

Anyway it was a fabulous confluence of ancient meets modern and how we as meditators can grow in our practice and our lives. I want to say more but I am six time zones out of whack. Over the next days, I’ll post some videos and there may be a few other surprises. In the meantime, enjoy the picture of the Lama’s blessing posted above. I took it with my Ipad, so sorry about the quality.

We need teachers like Sogyal more then ever. Someone who is able to the heart of mans confusions and sufferings and to put it across with purity and clarity.

Along with Chogyam Trungpa and Chime Rinpoche, he is one of the most liberated of teachers

Look forward to Tsoknyi Ripoche's new book, he has such marvelous tittles under his belt, and some real knock out teachings! The ipad photo turned out great, just sent away for a "Mickey" which turns an ipod into a portable recorder, so exciting, the two integrations, meditation/acti on and wisdom/technolo gies. Thanks for such a marvelous blog.
