From my own experience, I strongly agree with two things mentioned in his talk: First, that we all have the basic, "built-in" tendency for empathy which we have to "prevent" or cover up to not shine forth (which we all brought to a certain perfection by millions of occupations and distractions). And second, that it often takes someone to make the first move to "wake up" others and join in (like in the example with the man falling down in the train station). So I agree with Daniel: there is hope. And compassion IS contagious if we let it.
