Network Meditation Smackdown BBC vs. ABC

Both the BBC and ABC have good internet video news stories about meditation on the web

The BBC.co,uk earlier this year published a two part episode on meditation. Part one is about scientific evidence for meditation leading to greater levels of happiness. They interview Mathieu Riccard of course.  Part two I found even more interesting because they actually show before and after MRI scans someone who goes through a meditation program. You can really see why researchers would find these results intriguing.

ABCnew.go.com has some pretty cool stuff too. If you click here, you will find what is more like a typical news magazine sort of show on meditation and happiness. Because it lasts close to half an hour, they cover a lot of ground. They have a segment with Richie Davidson, who is maybe the most celebrated meditation researcher today. He did the experiments on Mingyur Rinpoche and other master meditators that showed nearly 100 fold increase in gamma activity in the brain amongst meditators with more than 10,000 hours of practice under their belt. Another segment is a really good interview with the Dalai Lama. One of the cutest moments is when the interviewer asks him “Are you enlightened?” . His Holiness replies “No”. The interviewer seems genuinely astonished and says “What hope is there for me then?”. The reply comes swiftly, “Enlightenment is not based on rank”  There is lots more including a Sharon Salzberg interview and commercial breaks (oh well someone has to pay).

Video: Meditation Masters teaching about Meditation Practice

What you can find on YouTube never ceases to amaze. Not only can you find the WhatMeditationReallyIs channel, but you can find all kinds of other places with videos of great meditation masters teaching.

One of my personal regrets was that I never met Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Here is a video of a very rare public teaching where he actually gave basic meditation instruction from Naropa Institute in 1974. Not the best quality but it survived! We aren't allowed to embed this one so you will have to click on the link.

Below you will find a wonderful video from the legendary Theravadan master Ajahn Chah. Enjoy!
